So Strong is its Longing

Strangler Figs, and Vines

So strong is its longing to live, the Strangler Fig becomes an invincible foe capable of
overtaking the stateliest of trees. The trees, powerless to stop the vines, eventually
succumb. This series reflects on how an outside force can overwhelm something -or
someone – taking total control.

The title of this series, So Strong is its Longing, is taken from the poem “Strangler Fig” by Jill Jennings, as published in her book, Pineapple Wine: Poems of Maui. Here is an excerpt:
….so strong is its longing,
its notion of place.
It’s a testament to adaptation,
a monument to survival
and to a singleness of desire.
